What's Your Playlist?

I used to not be able to write unless I had complete quiet. (HA!) Needless to say, finding a significant period of time when there is no sound has become somewhat tricky since having a baby. I mean, she goes to bed pretty early, but by that point I'm tired as hell and like to play some World of Warcraft with Sir Edmund the Hotness.

So I started writing during her morning nap, and found that I actually really enjoy listening to my iPod when I write. It can really help set the mood, so to speak. The latest album on repeat? O by Damien Rice.

Other bands/artists that have worked wonders lately:

Modest Mouse (Good News for People Who Love Bad News)

Cat Power (You Are Free)

the Across The Universe soundtrack

Jewel (Pieces of You, the only Jewel album I'm crazy about)

Lady Gaga- anything

Tori Amos- anything

Cursive- The Ugly Organ (makes high school seem like yesterday)

Alison Krauss/Robert Plant- anything

What do you listen to while you write, if anything at all?

I LOVE listening to music while I write, so much so that I make a playlist before I start writing.

Damien Rice is one of my faves. 9 Crimes inspired on of my wips. I also love Richard Ashcroft (he's on almost ALL of my playlist). Then there's Coldplay, Kings of Leon, Death Cab For Cutie, The Beatles, The Script, Maroon 5, Florence + the Machine ( Lungs was a brilliant album), The Killers, Breaking Benjamin, more recently Thom Yorke ( The Mess We're In & Hearing Damage), Muse. I also just discovered a band called Jonathan Tyler and the Northeren Lights, and this Canadian pop singer Royal Wood. Hehe, I'm always on the look-out for new music because you're right, it does set the mood, plus there are songs that just fit. They fit with the plot, the characters, and they help move the story along. Ah, I <3 music.

I really enjoy certain kinds of classical music when writing (blogging). when I cook or sew I listen to my Jason Mraz, Ingrid michaelson and Sarah bareilles (sp?) pandora station. Unless Emma is up, then we rock out to Disneyclassics.

Movie soundtracks for me. Especially if they're related to the book, i.e. Gladiator for my current WIP. Florence and the Machine is very inspiring too, but I prefer instrumental music for the most part. I can find vocals a bit distracting :)

Kecia- LOVE Pandora..have discovered so much new amazing music there. I can't wait to watch Disney movies with Lily!

Alex- I also love instrumental stuff- there are a few songs from Gladiator that always pop up on my Pandora and I love them. Lord of the Rings is another great one.

I HAVE to listen to music when I write. I've found that I'm drawn to GaGa, Seether, and The Fray. If they're on, the words just flow! Love this post!

Uhm...can I tell you how much I love Damien? He is AWESOME! I saw him in concert two years ago and have already told my sister that we're following him around the US (and possible abroad) during his next. He is amazing!

I've been listening to The National, The Swell Season and Mumford and Sons with my recent writing. I love mellow folk music.

I don't listen to music while actually writing, but music is so important for writing. I get inspired by Breaking Benjamin, Death Cab For Cutie, Within Temptation, Evanescence, Broken Social Scene, Greenday, The Pretty Reckless, Placebo etc.
