Let's just be clear on one thing: I am NOT a morning person. Like, not even a little. I defy science in the fact that it doesn't matter how much sleep I've gotten, I'll still gladly take more at any given time. (By the way, this'll be two blog posts in two days. That's gotta be a personal record, haha.)Take right now, for instance. It's seven thirty in the AM, and here I am, typing up a blog post with only half a working brain while Lily sits on my lap and watches the music video for Single Ladies in the other internet window. I'm glad you're enjoying yourself, Squidling. Mama is dreaming about hitting herself in the head with a hammer and sleeping it off for a few hundred days.
Alright, my disdain for morning is clear. So imagine my surprise when I realized that doing my freelance work right off the bat when I first wake up is actually....really amazing. HELL HATH FROZEN OVER, DEAR READERS.
It's true. The motivation of being able to be completely free for the remainder of the day has pushed me to begin getting my articles out of the way immediately. The results have been favorable, as I am now able to give in to The Inner Lazy And/Or Creative by ten am. It sort of makes every day feel like a day off because I don't have it in the back of my head that I'll have to work later. Also, sitting at the computer rambling off about How To Use Purple Eyeshadow kind of lets me wake up vvveeeeeerrrrrryyy slooooooowly. Which is always appreciated, right?
So, I can't believe I'm agreeing with this, but I guess the early bird really does get the worm. It totally frees my mind up for whatever activities I'm currently caught up in that I can catch up on when Lily takes her nap. At the moment, those activities are limited to playing Mass Effect 2, (BRILLIANT GAME,) writing up the final synopsis for my new novel, (a HORROR. Helllls yeah,) and catching up on my Desperate Housewives and/or Breaking Bad.
I can totally dig it.
Are you a morning person? A night owl? Any tips for awakening the inner morning person?

night owl for sure. as you know
But mornings in socal are so crisp, calm and gorgeous. Everything is slightly covered in dew, it is nice and cool out, and I can almost feel the ocean breeze through my hair. It ALMOST makes me want to get up early everyday and drink a cup of coffee on my porch...almost.
Oh my gosh....the mornings KILL me! Seriously, I despise mornings. I dread having children only for the fact that I'll lose all my precious sleep. I can't seem to function without 9-9 1/2 hours (which is usually next to impossible). I think I love sleep way too much! But yay to you getting your work done first and then having tons of free time...nice!
That's great, I'm so pleased for you! I've also become a morning worker since getting to university.
I am a Night Owl (as you know), but more often than not, I'm forced into Morning Person Duties (breakfast meetings in NYC, deadlines, phonecalls with foreign publishers overseas, etc). So I'm kind of both, which kind of sucks.
BUT. What gets me through the morning is a ritual. Seriously, it's probably all in my head, but having the ritual wakes me up slowly and gets my brain working. Maybe writing your articles while sitting with Lily is your ritual? Mine is 15-20 minutes of down time while I sip a cup of coffee (I usually spend downtime either staring off into space or reading a magazine/something not work-related), then checking my emails so I'm ready for the day.
I have no idea how I still manage to be a Night Owl while also being forced into the role of a Morning Person most times, but I'm sure one day I'll just fall asleep for a thousand years and wake up cryogenically frozen on a spaceship filled with zombies.
Maybe.
calikas- SoCal mornings sound incredible. I know what you mean about sitting on the porch, I've actually started doing that with Lily in the evenings while she plays and the air gets cooler. It's so relaxing, I can't even tell you.
Rachele- I get you girl. I'm a big sleep fan, which is funny considering I want another baby. I just hold on to the knowledge that SOME day...in the far future...I'll be able to sleep a lot more. Haha!
Thanks, AJ :D
Jo- I just lol'd. I love how you were able to bring zombies into this. They really do make everything so much better. Also, YES to the ritual- they help so much it's insane.
